Juniper Ridge Elementary School: 2017

Grade 7

During my time volunteering in a grade 7 classroom at Juniper  Ridge I assisted the teacher in her daily duties. These duties included marking, helping facilitate/teach lessons, supervising tasks, assisting the children with their assignments and learning different classroom management techniques. This was my first volunteer experience in an elementary school classroom and I have to say it was my favorite. This experience showed me that I like intermediate grades more than primary.

Kindergarten

In this kindergarten class, I assisted the children in various activities such as one-on-one reading, alphabet practice, working their memory and helping the teacher facilitate lessons. I also assisted them with working on their fine motor skills such as writing the alphabet and their names. Volunteering in a kindergarten class was a huge contrast to my previous experience in a grade 7 class but it taught me a lot. It helped me see both ends of the spectrum and I am grateful for that.

Kindergarten/Grade One

Every week I assisted the children in their reading and writing skills. I also helped participate in their physical activity and facilitate their daily lessons. This was the same classroom I had volunteered in the year before and it was interesting to see the same classroom setting but with all different students. I guess that is something I will have to get used to as a teacher – change.
